NeuroFitness with NeurOptimal

Neurofeedback: Fixing your brain waves — the electrical activity in the brain — changes how you feel, how you act, how you interact with others.

Similar to biofeedback, neurofeedback, or EEG biofeedback, helps reduce your stress, insomnia, brain fog, and anxiety by changing your brainwave patterns. Helpful for treating many symptoms, ranging from depression to chronic pain, neurofeedback can help you eliminate your discomfort due to tired and unbalaned brainwaves.

Neurofeedback trainers for decades worked with their clients to change brain waves using programs like video games. The idea was to train the brain to produce more or less of various frequencies that are thought to correlate with different brain states. Working that way involves a certain amount of guesswork — trial and error — that can produce good results, but that can also result in side effects. In recent years, in part due to increases in computing power, it has become possible to train the brain in a different way, with little if any risk of side effects.

We will do this state of the art central nervous system training using the NeurOptimal® system. That means going a big step beyond neurofeedback as it is traditionally done. I won’t be making an educated guess about what your brain needs. Instead, the system will give feedback to your brain in real time, bringing it back to the present moment precisely when it is about to shift states.

This is information that it doesn’t get anywhere else in life. The brain uses this information to renormalize itself. Shifts into less than desirable states can just… drop away.

Do the changes last? Yes, because the brain likes running more efficiently. It will be paying close attention to the feedback — interruptions to the music you’ll be listening to (whether or not the interruptions are long enough to be heard consciously). The brain then does what it does best: Use the information to organize itself. Your brain is already masterful at that; and we are going to be giving it unique information that it can use to run more efficiently, with more resiience, more flexibility and more stability. We become more able to respond to life well rather than react out of old learned stress responses. Focus typically gets better, recycling the past drops away, and your body can use its resources instead for growth, repair and wellness.

Neurofeedback works directly with the central nervous system

NeurOptimal® uses unique filtering and ongoing targeting of a broad range of frequencies, rather than focusing on narrow ranges chosen by the provider. This is technology that is only available with NeurOptimal® neurofeedback. Again, there’s no guesswork involved. The system is responding to your unique brain in real time.

Your brain is the most complex system on the Earth, and it is masterful at organizing itself on your behalf. NeurOptimal® uses the EEG — information about the electrical activity in your brain — to train your CNS (the brain and spinal cord) to be at its best, taking advantage of its powerful ability to organize and normalize itself. Because your brain does this in the way that is uniquely right for you, it’s not being pushed or pulled in a provider chosen direction, making the process virtually side effect free. It’s also true that the results will be unique to you. It’s not possible to predict exactly what changes your brain will make, or how soon, or in what order. It’s atypical, though, for a NeurOptimal® client to not be pleased with the results.

Is neurofeedback the same as biofeedback?

People often ask about the difference between neurofeedback and biofeedback. Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback, but traditional biofeedback works with the peripheral nervous system (the PNS) — the outer edges of the body. With biofeedback, the client learns to make changes to the PNS (such as reducing muscle tension or increasing skin temperature), and practices the skills on his or her own, with the expectation that learning those skills will affect the central nervous system in a positive way.

Unlike traditional biofeedback, neurofeedback works directly with the central nervous system (CNS). Think of this as going up the river to the source — the CNS. The CNS affects all of the body’s systems. Changes in the CNS will reflect in the PNS — and in your life.

What is Neurofeedback Used For?

There are many different disorders and ailments that neurofeedback has been shown to be useful for. The most widely researched is ADD/ADHD, although its use in treating those suffering from seizures, teeth grinding, and cererbral palsy, among other things, has also been examined. Neurofeedbacks role in treating fibromyalgia has also been lightly studied with positive results. But neurofeedback has also been found helpful for treating a number of symptoms of fibromyalgia, including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Chronic Pain
  • Sleep disorders
  • Managing stress
  • Chronic headaches
  • Short term memory loss

Neurofeedback has also been used for chronic fatigue, although this area has not been as thoroughly researched.

On average, most people notice a change in their condition within the first 10 sessions, although further training will likely be necessary. Total length of the treatment will vary from patient to patient and be dependant on their issue. For example, individuals seeking help for ADD may require 40 or more appointments while those dealing with chronic pain may need less than 20 sessions. You and your neurofeedback trainer will discuss what the right length of treatment is for you, which can usually be determined within the first few sessions.

Results and Side Effects

Few adverse side effects of neurofeedback have been found when the technique is practiced properly and under professional guidance. As for results, because the brain is effectively being taught a new skill, once this skill is learned and mastered, it can be retained and continuously used. Therefore, it is thought that, in most instances, the results of neurofeedback are permanent.

Do you own a business?

It is possible to use the training as a personal development expence or as a bonus/perk for your sales team. Particularly when you use one of our performance packages. Check with you accountant, but these types of focus and improvement trainings have been written off as business expenses.

Costs and Insurance

Depending on the package you purchase, your sessions may cost between $45 and $65 each. Some insurance providers may cover some of the cost or offer an annual cap on services. We are out-of-network providers and you will need to see if your insurance will cover services through us. We have had no problem with using Flex and Medical Spending Accounts.
